SAIL Basics
Swim Association Invitational League (SAIL)
The Swim Association Invitational League, one of the biggest recreational swim leagues in the Southeast, has been a tradition for generations of Greenville County families. The 32 teams are organized in divisions – red, purple, white, blue, green and gold – based on size and points earned. The season starts in June and ends with a countywide Championships and Classics Meets in July.
SAIL Divisional Meet
Each SAIL division holds a swim
meet in which all teams in that division compete as a team for the Metcalf Cup
(most points earned by their team) and the Founder's Cup Quality Points award (team points
divided by number of swimmers).
The Divisional Meet is the focus of the season. The results of Divisionals are
used to determine the placement of the 30+ teams for the following season.
Therefore, it is important to have as many swimmers as possible, participate
and help the team.
SAIL Championships and Classics Meet
The results from all of the
Divisional Meets are combined as if it was one meet to identify the fastest 40
SAIL swimmers in each age group and event to compete individually in Classics
(top 16 swimmers) and Championships (next fastest 24 swimmers).
The Championships Meet (Places 17-40) is held the following Saturday after the
Divisional Meet and the Classics Meet (Places 1-16) is held the day after
Championships Meet on Sunday afternoon. For 2015, the Championships Meet was
held on Saturday, July 18 and the Classics Meet was held on Sunday, July 19. In
2016, Championships & Classics (C&C) will be held on Saturday, July 16
(Championships) and Sunday, July 17 (Classics) at Westside Aquatic Center.

Managing the Championships
& Classics (C&C) meets requires the cooperation of more than 4,000
participants. All swimmers who earn their spot in this meet are encouraged to
participate.
However, when unable to compete for any reason, we want to allow other swimmers
to fill these limited spots. A scratch denies a swimmer an opportunity and
leaves an empty lane diminishing the quality of the meet.
Therefore, it is imperative that all swimmers make a commitment to swim (or
not) in C&C by an announced date. A swimmer scratching after that date
incurs a meaningful fine.
SAIL Handbook
The purpose of the SAIL Handbook is to formalize the procedures
and practices for the Greenville, South Carolina SWIM ASSOCIATION INVITATIONAL
LEAGUE. It is, by design, an incomplete document, which is updated and revised

The intent of the committee who compiled the SAIL Basics Handbookwas to form the
foundation for the passing of information to new SAIL Representatives, and
insure that all SAIL Representatives work toward the common goal of having a
first class, competitive summer swimming program for the children and member
pools in Greenville County.
